Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation or low-level laser therapy, is gaining traction in the equine world. Though it has been used in horses since the early 1980's, it is becoming more popular with every day equestrians as a alternative form of therapy.
Equipped with photoreceptors, living cells can sense and interact with red light. When the light is absorbed by these photoreceptors, many biological reactions are triggered within the cell. It enhances blood supply to the area and accelerated cellular metabolism, resulting in a rush of oxygen and nutrients to the cell. This aids in the removal of cellular waste and supports tissue healing.
Additional benefits of red light therapy include:
High Caliber Equine Massage is now including the use of the RevitaVet Poll Cap™ in our practice! The Poll Cap is a great addition to any massage, but is especially designed for those horses that have a harder time relaxing into their massage, or those with significant tension in their poll.
The Poll Cap offers targeted red light therapy to address your horse's autonomic nervous system through acupuncture points. Relieving sympathetic stress in your horse offers many benefits, including a calmer, more relaxed animal. Softening and releasing the horse's poll affects the coordinating actions between the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and hyoid bones, allowing your horse to be softer in hand and more athletic.
The Poll Cap addresses common ailments, including:
•head tension
•head tilting
•teeth grinding
•TMJ ailments
•problems of the 1st and 2nd vertebrae
As always, the use of the Poll Cap is included in the base price of the massage. In times of stress, al la carte red light sessions are also available.
